The Effects of Antidepressants on Persistent Depression

The best evidence is from chronic major depressive disorder studies, which suggests that if someone has three or more episodes of major depression, they need lifetime antidepressant treatment. Persistent depression there's just not the equivalent level of data. What I usually tell people is take medication for a couple of years and then if you're wanting to come off medication, then do a gradual taper and see how things go.
