The Importance of Fieldwork in World War II

When I did my dissertation in Egypt, there were just all of these stories I would hear about archaeologists or anthropologists who did very simple sorts of things that did involve collecting intelligence. And then a professor who had been involved in the Aswan Dam project, reconnaissance project in the 1950s and 60s. So it's very non-invasive, you're just passing through, but if you have an eye for knowing what's what in terms of munitions and things like that, it makes sense that you have these people who can go out there.
