The History of Saint John's Eve in New Orleans

St. John's Eve is a celebration that takes place on June 23, the night before the feast day of St. John the Baptist. It was co-opted and reimagined by the black and mixed race population there. Some sources like to credit Marie LaVoe herself for starting the New Orleans Saint John's Eve tradition. In Haitian Voodoo, Saint John the Baptist is also worshipped as a minor loa.
