Frederick douglas was born some time around the year 18 17 in maryland as frederick bailey. His mother was of mixed race, native american african and european. Many speculate that it was his first master. Frederick plains in his autobiography that slaves in the city were often treated significantly better than those who worked on plantations. He ended up as the property of a woman named lucretia ald, who wanted to give him a better life.
