Maitian is firmly convinced in the depravity of man after the war. He thinks the liberals and also some conservatives are out to lunch with anthropology, he says. Maitian was one of HL Menken's best buddies; his book Elmer Gantry is dedicated to Hemingway-like writer. And so that really struck me and it also made me think of connection between Boston newspaper man, HL Menken and Maitian.
