The Impact of LARKs on Infant Mortality in the United States

Lower income women in the United States are much more likely than higher income women to experience an infant death. This raises the question of whether expanding access to long-acting reversible contraceptives or LARKs has the ability to lower the infant mortality rate by giving lower income women autonomy over if and when to have children. To get around this endogeneity, I used the rollout of three privately funded family planning programs that provided free LARKs to lower-income women in Colorado, Iowa, and St. Louis. Using both a staggered treatment event study and synthetic control design, these programs reduce the infant mortality rates by 1.1 deaths per 1000 live births or roughly 18%.
