Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Gothles was appointed chief engineer for the Panama Canal in 1907. He quickly proves that he's neither one to mess with, nor a bad apple. In May 1907, their strike brings the operation of all but 13 of 68 shovels to a screeching halt. But things really progress at this point after an accident kills 23 men and wounds 40 more.
