Some commentators think that the whole Mahabharata was written by Bhagawan Vaidriyas. To have a Bhagavad Gita, he had to have a proper background to convert that into a scripture which can guide mankind. If you remove Bhagvad Gita andMahabharata becomes another story of a kuru clan - it's like Upanishads. So, they have a symbiotic relationship with each other.
