The Ballroom of Romance

The first story of William Trevor's that I ever read when I was 19 and sitting on a pier in Fife. In it a woman no longer young at 36 called Brydie has gone to a wayside dance hall as used to be across rural Ireland. The youths who danced with her then in their Saturday night new suits had disappeared into the town or to Dublin or Britain leaving behind them those who became the middle aged bachelors of the hills. At this point in the story she's looking at Dano Ryan who is one of the members of the band and wondering if this might be the last hope. And please excuse the Irish accent, I've worked with wonderful Irish actors for years
