The Importance of Juneteenth
Opal Lee was born in 1926 in Marshall, Texas. She grew up celebrating Juneteenth at a local fairground with baseball games and food she said it felt like Christmas. Her family moved to an all-white neighborhood when she was nine years old; their home was set on fire the next week. Since that day, Lee has made it her mission to make sure people knew Juneteenth was more than just a backyard barbecue.
