The role of former Prime Ministers in Britain is linked more to trouble than anything else. They are one of the very few to get there, and that gives them a kind of special sense of insight which tends to cause trouble for those currently navigating nightmarish challenges of leadership. Tony Blair is interesting because he said this to me once when he was Prime Minister: "I wouldn't be in any way at all a backseat driver" He kept out of the way with Gordon Brown, but some supporters made his life hellish as PM.
