Neuropeptides and Unconventional Neurotransmitters

A neuropeptide is just a small peptide, three to about 40 amino acids in length that acts like a neurotransmitter. In the human genome, we have genes that go for about 90 precursors that can be processed into about 100 neuropeptides. Most neurons are going to make at least one conventional neurotransmitters and then one or more neuropeptic co-transmits which modulates the effect of the basic neurotransmission.
