The Importance of Tourism in the Maldives

The first group of tourists arrived in the Maldives in February 1972. They stayed in humble lodgings in three houses in Malay, looked after by Ahmed and his friends. But it wasn't always easy: there were no banks, no airport and no telephones. Local people thought that tourism here would be impossible. And they thought that we were quite silly, quite stupid, because we are very young and running around.
