Climate scientists have been looking at satellite images of the vast southern ocean, which plays a major role in controlling the globe climate. And they found massive ulgl blooms fertilized by debris blown thousands of kilometers from the fires. Marine algi are sometimes called the forests of the sea because they play an important role in sucking up carbon from the atmosphere where it can be stored in the deep ocean layers.
