After 2011, there was a huge number of moving parts and it does require, I think, almost another book in and of itself to tell that story. From the 1970s onwards, you see an increasing what I call kind of fatalism or pessimism about the Middle East as a region. There's actually kind of soft pedaling of what the West can achieve in terms of projecting its own interests when it comes to groups like the Brotherhood. That leaves you in a blind spot with regards to making a policy on the Brotherhood," he says.
