Don't Give a Kidney to a Stranger
Abigail Marsh is a neuroscientist who studies what gets into the heads of heroes. At Georgetown University she has published studies on two kinds of people, psychopaths and altruistic donors. She found a striking difference in a pair of tiny structures near the bottom of the brain called the amygdala. They subconsciously recognize danger and react faster than conscious thought. The amygdala also seems to allow you to empathize with other people's fear.
