Justice von Liebig identified nitrogen potassium and phosphorus as the key ingredients of life in 1837. The war effort put a tremendous amount of investment into the development of chemical fertilizer during those years. It wasn't until about 1960 when little four wheel drive tractors and front end loaders and plastic pipe and chippers were developed to change things.
