A job in Constantinople was so attractive that men with money would try and buy them. Even some clerical positions were unofficially up for sale. A well-placed UNIX could become very wealthy and influential. Deliberate castration was of course illegal in the empire, and so many UNIX came from beyond the borders. The government of the East was far more organized and regulated than it had been in the age of the UNIX.
