Comedians like Richard Pryor and Gabby Hayes used to come through Norfolk, South Carolina. The comics would stay in the black communities because they couldn't stay in white neighborhoods. They performed at one of the two theaters where kids could watch a midnight ramen show. "It's not something I say was, it's not a point of better than or it was in context of how we live," he says.
