The Dutch Republic

The Netherlands became independent in the mid-17th century. They were one of the Spanish-ruled territories that rebelled when Spain tried to assert central control and raise taxes. The Dutch had been renowned as merchants and bankers since the Middle Ages. But by 1789, the Dutch were relegated to secondary power status.
