The Wandering Teacher of Wisdom

Empedocles is depicting himself as a wandering teacher of wisdom. He delivers healing oracles and other divinatory counsel. Now this is a theme which we've seen already in Greek culture. There were various types of wandering religious specialists about from at least the 6th century onwards, and they persist in various forms right up to the Christian era.
