Louis XV encouraged the development of French pyrotechny. The first to rely chiefly on fireworks for the effect, instead of using them merely to embellish a scenic or architectural structure. Displays in France during the 18th century were those on the occasions of the birth of the Duke of Brittany and victory over the Allies.
