A passage from Melonkundra is both hopeful and sad. The author was a Czech dissident before the Velvet Revolution in 1989, which overthrew the Communist Party. He went to exile in France in 1975 and considers himself now a French writer. His Czechoslovak citizenship was revoked in 1979 but he was given Czech citizenship in 2019.
