It could be that the bear-like shape and the big beak evolved as adaptations for exploiting as many food options as possible. They're also nocturnal, which not only is like plenty of mammals are nocturnal,. that's also a very useful predator feature. So those keen senses could have evolved as a method for hunting but also for foraging in that deeper ancestry where you have to find fruits or seeds or termite moundsor whatever.
