I Wanted Her to Feel Uncomfortable
I did want her to feel alone. I think grief is something that makes you very lonely and losing her son. And maybe that kind of loneliness is also has a kind of manifestation in the situation of the checkpoint where she doesn't fit in anywhere. She didn't really, like sometimes in stories, there's other people that sympathize with your main character so they're on some kind of side, but all she really had to sympathize with her was the reader.
