Panama's Independence Day Speech
On November 3rd, 1903, Panama declares its independence. The US State Department recognizes Panama as an independent nation several hours after the declaration. Teddy Roosevelt immediately authorized the negotiation of a new canal treaty with the new government of Panama. No Panamanians actually signed the treaty giving the US the right to build a Panama Canal.
