Dine Forre in Italian
Alfresco is slang for in prison, which just doesn't sound too appealing. In ancient Italy, jail cells were often holes in the ground and they had the top open to the sky. So it's sort of fresco, meaning fresh. We borrowed from the French the word picnic, which has kind of a squishy etymology. It apparently goes all the way back to the 17th century.
