received wisdom rather than a tested fact is that practical methods are more likely to promote transfer. Most evidence suggests at least on a wide range of practice settings that the so-called real world of practice is in fact the unreal world where students often learn the equivalent of the tolemic model of the solar system. So basically what you're saying is when you go out and do things in the real world you don't end up necessarily learning a very good way of thinking about things, that's the evidence that we have from psychology.
