The Importance of Context in Dialogue
New writers tend to forget the motives that their characters have in a particular scene of dialogue and focus instead on the goals. The other thing, which is actually where I thought you were about to go, is on the nose dialogue. Which is where the character says exactly the thing that they are thinking and exactly the way they're thinking it. Frequently, when we are having conversation, there's a lot of shared background. There's also hidden motives and other things which will affect the way we're saying and why. And now I have the opportunity to tell a whole new story and add subtext as a result.
