We thought that this exposure to the entire world through the computer or phone screen was going to make kids grow up much faster. And in fact, paradoxically, its having the opposite effect. The trend of growing up slowly began long before the smart phone. It's part of a bigger cultural story that when we live longer, we expect education to take longer. People have fewer children and nurture them more carefully. This ends up meaning that children and tens just take longer to grow up because they're more carefully protected for a longer time.
