The Importance of Statistics in Scientific Studies

When doing a scientific study, is there a statistician that accompanies the scientist? The scientists I know who really understand statistics tend to be in fields where they don't use statistics. Statistics checks for one particular error you might have made, but if you don't have a good logical case, the statistics are worthless. There's a lot of different kinds of statisticians.
