The seer stone is important, but if we're going to Joseph Smith's history and official sources, the Nephite interpreters are important as well. In fact, can I share my favorite second hand source from Joseph Smith? Yeah. This is by Jonathan Hadley. He was a printer in Palmyra who Joseph Smith had approached about potentially printing the Book of Mormon. So that's our earliest also mention of the hat. All of the witnesses talk about Joseph putting him into a hat. If they mention anything more than just by the Uriman Thumum, they will always mention the hat. That's super early.
