D&D - Character Creation and the Game Loop

The simplicity of D&D encourages you to play according to your nature, rather than your build. Players will dig into those aspects of the encounter, they'll dig into the aspects of their characters,. That really comes out and it creates a lot of flavor. And I think that's why you see fifth edition trying to create these various parts to your background, because they're trying to encourage this kind of play.
