Jasper Johns has put painting on the level of linguistic intelligence. Richter is almost a Nietzschean artist, a de-Enesian-Nichian artist by comparison to Johns. And I think that's what he cannot handle. That degree of absolutely American, almost positive, intelligence in Johns' work of the first 20 years in particular. He won't answer the question.
