The History of Dominion Day

The British North American Act came into effect on July 1st, 1867. Celebrations were informally held for the next decade before a formal holiday was created in 1879. Dominion Day didn't have the same impact or meaning that independence they had when it went into effect. The name 'Dominion' became more of a sticking point during the 20th century as people began referring to day as Canada Day. In 1958, Canadian Prime Minister John Deaf and Baker initiated several traditions for Dominion Day including Trooping of the Color Ceremony at Parliament Hill. There has been no attempt to formally change the name from Dominion Day to Canada Day since 1946.
