The first use of instant replay came on September 3rd 2008, when Alex Rodriguez hit what appeared to be a home run to left field at Tropicana Field. In late August 2008, Major League Baseball decided to combat umpire errors by officially allowing instant replay to be used to correct calls made in game for the first time. The NFL adopted replay in 1986, the NHL in 1991 and the NBA in 2002. David Lewis is an architectural historian and baseball researcher based in Boston.
