In traditional chemistry, that's not what one's usually doing. One's just saying, throw these molecules together, they will react. You can think about it as this graph plus this graph will be reconfigured into that other graph. If I thought about it that way, sort of 50 years ago when I was learning about chemistry, I probably would have been much more enthusiastic about chemistry.
