Learning to Read Outside of a Standard School Setting
Experts seem to say that reading isn't as as much of a taught skill as it is just a naturally learned skill. Research in the book looking at young people who've learned outside of a conventional school setting researchers in England find that the average age of proficiency for reading is about eight and a half years old. Today's expectations in standard schooling sessions in standard schooling settings for literacy are at the far left of that bell curve.
