William Acton, a 19th century French writer, wrote about how it was to get into official sex work in France. He describes the process of signing up for public prostitution as "a sort of consciousness on the part of the latter of the entire illegality of the proceedings throughout" The author says he believes this is all that can be done to warn and restrain women who want to become prostitutes.
