Vulfila would have grown up surrounded by stories of his ancestors deeds and raids. He had seen Roman soldiers come beyond the frontier and met Roman merchants. Vulfila saw siege engines like catapults, ballistas, and mobile siege towers. For five or ten years, depending on the arrangement he or his aristocratic lord had made with the Romans, the tightly disciplined world of the army would have been his home.
