Sphodrias and the Pirates

There was a certain Spartan who was in charge of a garrison in one of the Beotian cities near Thebes. Sphodrias is not the sharpest spear in the armory, and he fails to realize that the men trying to get into attack Athens unprovoked are none other than Palopidus and his associates. He marches out after dinner one night from Thespi, where he's the garrison commander, and he thinks he'll have the Piraeus captured by morning. But he gets slowed down with this and that on the road, and daybreak comes, and he's still a few miles off. His troops get hungry and greedy and they raid some country estates
