Arthur says scandinavia has always been a profoundly inhospitable environment for human habitation. He argues that in such conditions, survival of the individual depends on survival of the group. There is a sense of community that's built in those sorts of conditions and it can only be strengthened by social bonds between people who work together to make a living. And when you think about danish culture, not just in nortic culture as a whole, but in its own efflorescence from the viking age, comes into its own.
