The Battle Lines Between Hermeneutics and Translation
Lane Dennis, the editor of The New York Review of Books, wrote a new version of the Bible in 1978. He wanted to use it as a basis for a new translation but was told by the National Council of Churches that they wouldn't let him do it. Lane spent seven hours writing a letter explaining what he would do and getting permission from David Lull, who is in charge of permissions at the NCC. "I just felt the Lord wanted me to work on this," says Lane about his time working on the book.
