What Happened to the Mayan Culture?

The Mayans were in Central America for thousands of years, but it was around the year 1800 BC, so nearly 2000 years before Christ. They changed from hunter gatherers to farmers really and they were very good at it. The Spanish came over in the 16th century and that led to their downfall. But they never became completely extinct because millions of their descendants still exist across the world today.
