Peyoteism in the Native American Church
The use of peyote, the masculine producing cactus in the Native American church, comes along at a time when Native Americans were on the verge. The US government at that point had an explicit policy about destroying Indian culture and they were going to do it by putting young Indians into boarding schools. There were two very interesting religious movements that began in the 1880s at this moment of maximum peril. It wasn't until 1994 that Native Americans got the right to use their sacrament ofpeyote.
