Instinct Psychology - The Importance of the Intense Impulse

The method of instinct psychology and instinct sociology consists in an arbitrary classification of the immediate goals of action. It is assumed that this explanation demolishes once for all the odious teachings of economics and utilitarian ethics. The means which man chooses for its satisfaction are determined by a rational con duration of expense and success. He who acts under an emotional impulse also acts. What distinguishes an emotional action from other actions is the valuation of input and output. Emotions disarrange valuations. Inflamed with passion, man sees the goal as more desirable than he would in cool deliberation.
