The Importance of Common Conceptions

According to Epicurus, our senses cannot be wrong. But this doesn't guarantee that you can avoid false beliefs. Sensation also gives rise to something more basic than belief. This is what Epicurus calls a preconception. These common conceptions are important because everyone will agree to them. Preconceptions form a basis for doing philosophy and a kind of check on the philosophical theories we develop.
