Frederick Alphyser wanted to assess the situation more coolly and he had a particular way of doing that which was about the intellectual disciplines. He thought of Marx as a scientist in a very particular way because of what he thought Marx thought knowledge was and how you could test knowledge. There's a kind of like intellectual meaning about the division of labor in the university and kind of reclaiming of scientific method or accuracy to the humanities but there's also a political meaning  to rescuing Marxism from Soviet style self-congratulation and triumphalism.
