Ibn Bess's Quranic Prohibition Against Tabarosh, Manemu Istilant

In the 1970s, Salafis were trying to stake out a claim to public morality in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Ibn Bess was between a rock and a hard place because he didn't have the textual resources that he had on other questions such as praying and shoes. He declared a Tabarosh, Manemu Istilant, which is to say the prohibition against flaunting is actually prohibition against mixing. But within a few years, he has dropped it. So what does this tell us? Well, it tells us that the Salafis commitment to gender segregation as a non-negotiable principle is one that doesn't emerge from early Islam.
