How Much Textual Criticism Do You Need?
For a lot of texts from the ancient world, we don't have lots of manuscripts. Is it then helpful to have so many different manuscripts so you can go and check different readings? Or does that complicate the picture more? Both. What textual criticism does is just try to get rid of things that are obvious mistakes and try to figure out what it originally says.
